Ready to run (RTR) refers to commercially available model railway products which can be placed on a layout and operated without significant assembly or conversion. Availability of significant RTR stock defines the main popular modelling gauges. By contrast, most of the finescale gauges will supplied only in kit form, often only as partial kits (for example with locomotive bodies being supplied separately from motors and wheelsets).
